Wouldn’t It Be Great If They Could Just Brush Their Teeth Twice A Day?

Since they can’t, we’ve got a plan. Urban Animal educates our clients about what they can do to lessen the need for invasive and costly procedures. However, when those things are needed, we are here to help.

Our dental department is led by a team of veterinary professionals who concentrate on dentistry and oral surgery every day. This allows the team to focus on your pet’s safety utilizing current standard operating procedures with optimal proficiency for the best of care.

Although Urban Animal does not recommend annual dental cleanings, we stress the importance of preventative care to enhance your pet’s quality of life. Any recommended treatment is for long-term health or when medically indicated. Our team can talk about ways of brushing their teeth, healthy chewing practices, and other preventative methods for good at-home oral care to reduce further visits.

Oral health is important to your pet’s total health and bacteria from a diseased mouth has been shown to be a contributing factor in the development of liver, kidney, and heart disease. Some warning signs your pet may have dental disease:

  • Change in eating habits

  • Swallowing food whole or dropping food from mouth

  • Pawing at the mouth

  • Excessive drooling

  • Loss of teeth

  • Brown/yellow buildup on teeth

  • Inflamed or bleeding gums

  • Lethargy

Oral health is important to your pet’s total health. Unfortunately, an astonishing 80% of dogs and cats over age three have significant dental disease. What’s more, bacteria from a diseased mouth has been shown to be a contributing factor to the development of liver, kidney, and heart disease. Let Urban Animal help with your pet’s oral health.

A thorough oral exam and assessment under anesthesia must be performed to assess and treat oral disease in dogs and cats accurately and adequately. At Urban Animal, a pet’s dental cleaning is done by a veterinary dental hygienist trained in the special considerations of dog and cat mouths. If intervention is necessary, Urban Animal will converse with the owner to establish an individualized treatment plan for the pet.

In the fall of 2023, Urban Animal embarks on something truly different – in the veterinary industry and the U.S. – a workers’ cooperative. In the last decade, there has been an insane influx of private equity and venture capital into the industry which has drastically changed the trajectory of how veterinary medicine is delivered and what it costs.

As a workers’ cooperative, Urban Animal is poised to keep how veterinary medicine is practiced and who influences how the industry evolves in the hands of those on the frontlines – veterinary professionals not a faceless cadre focused solely on the bottom line. Urban Animal Cooperative strives to be sustainable and transparent with a democratically-governed organization where employees have a voice in how the company grows, keeping pets, people and profits in harmony. How Urban Animal delivers veterinary care is by embracing convenience, in its multifarious definition and subjective interpretation. First, convenience in our walk-in model promotes a fast-paced environment, respectful self-advocacy, and economically-priced services with the flexibility of same day service. Secondly, convenience also thrives in our appointment model which promotes an opportunity to schedule dedicated time with enhanced conversations in a more relaxed space when more time with the veterinary team is desired and financial resources are more fluid.

Regardless of model, Urban Animal’s veterinary team provide compassionate, option-based veterinary care by professionals with extensive experience in the field of veterinary medicine. We are passionate about providing accurate information regarding your pet’s health, while also presenting a range of treatment options. Currently with three convenient locations in Capitol Hill, Downtown Seattle, and White Center  – with FREE PARKING – Urban Animal is not your everyday veterinary practice and you’ll sense the difference the moment you step through our front door.
